The AAEP website is an excellent source of information for horse owners and offers a list of key signs to look for in a horse to evaluate their soundness.
Some of these signs include:
- Bright-eyed and alert
- A hearty appetite
- Clear eyes (no clouding or discoloration)
- Clean nostrils, free of excessive discharge
- A body condition score of 4-5
- A shiny hair coat
- Pink, moist gums
- Even weight bearing of all 4 feet
